- aka Don. Don was Sales manager for Sheriff Foods for a territory from Orillia, Ontario, Canada east to the Maritime Provinces and the Caribbean. In 1948 he was sent to South Africa to investigate if Sheriff's should start operations there. He advised Sheriff's that it was not a good business decision. He then resigned his job and stayed in South Africa. Mabel and the two children, Mary (8) and Barry (3), sailed to Cape Town in April 1949. Don and Helen started and owned Purity Baby Food which was later sold to Ricket and Coleman, and then a variety of food processing plants and frozen food plants in South Africa. Returned to Canada and lived in British Columbia.
THOMPSON - PIERCE
Trinity United Church, Peterborough, was the scene of a lovely autumn wedding on Saturday afternoon, when Mabel Helen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Pierce became the bride of Donald A. Thomson, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.C. Thomson of Orillia. The Rev. George Easton conducted the ceremony. Mrs. H.A. Mitchell sang the solo O Promise Me and Miss Mabel Clarry played the organ music. The Church was beautifully decorated with yellow and bronze chrysanthemums.
The bride, given in marriage by her father, looked charming in her mother's wedding gown of ivory satin, with fitted tucked bodice and short train. She wore a finger length tulle veil, held in place with ostrich feather tips, and carried Talisman roses and lily-of-the-valley. Miss Mary Pierce attended her sister, wearing a floor-length gown of aquamarine satin with fitted basque and puffed sleeves, and headdress of ostrich tips with velvet streamers to match her gown. She carried a contrasting bouquet of bronze baby mums. The groom was attended by his brother John Thomson, of Painswick and the ushers were Mr. John Pierce, brother of the bride and Mr. Willard Thompson, of Toronto.
Following the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents on Homewood Avenue, Peterborough. Mrs. Pierce received with he bridal couple wearing a gown of grape wine faille with matching accessories and corsage of Joanne Hill roses. Mrs. Thomson, mother of the groom, was in black with silver fox and shoulder bouquet of bettertime roses.
For travelling the bride chose a teal blue ensemble with coat of French boucle with crimmer fur trim and small hat with wine veil. They left for a motor trip through Quebec and will reside in Halifax.

THOMSON, Donald Albert - passed away January 1, 1992, Donald Albert Thomson, late of Gibsons, B.C., age 78 years. Survived by his loving wife Helen; 1 son Barry Thomson and wife Cheryl of Mossel Bay, South Africa; 1 daughter Mary Solomon and husband Doug, of Gibsons; 5 grandchildren; Graham and wife Jane, Donald, Cathy, Duncan and David, 1 sister Ruth Thomson of Orillia, Ontario. Funeral service was held Friday, January 3 in the Chapel of Devlin Funeral Home, Gibsons. Cremation followed. Flowers gratefully declined.
