    • Mary Thomson, as an enterprising young wife, would carry her butter and eggs to York market, a distance of 10 miles, by a footpath through the woods. At the end of three years the industrious couple had so prospered that they were able to purchase a mare and a side-saddle on which Mary might ride to market. Two years later, they were able to buy another horse to make a team and they in ingeniously fashioned a set of harness from strips of basswood bark.
