In 1628, Sir William was created Viscount Drumlanrig, and in 1633, Earl of Queensberry. He was the father of 4 sons and 2 daughters including James, eldest son and heir, and Sir William of Kelhead, whose descendants would figure quite prominently in the future of the Queensberry line. He died in 1640.
