John's father, Joseph, purchased part of Lot 55, Concession 1, Medonte Township in 1887 for $3,500 from Nathaniel Dyment. The property included a Gist Mill. Joseph ran and improved the mill. John C. took over the mill and later his sons, Jack and Harold managed the mill until 1989. The mill has not been used since 1989 but was still standing in 2002. (From Another Look At Hillsdale 2002. In the book are photos of the mill; John C. in 1910 and Mrs. John C. in 1955)
