    • Sonny played halfback for Michigan State University Spartans football team 1948-50 and had 19 rushing touchdowns. He was an All American halfback with Michigan State in 1950. Was Most Valuable Player in the Hula Bowl in 1951 playing with Michigan State. In 1951 he was a third round pick of the New York Giants National Football League and was still with them in 1953. Sometime in this period, Sonny was a Lieutenant in the Korean War (1950-53). Became Assistant Coach with the Spartans. Then Head Coach in University of Colorado Buffaloes 1959-61. In 1961 there was a scandal over paying Buffaloes college football players from a slush fund. Sonny was fired however some felt he was a scapegoat as the payments had been going on for years. Colorado won the Big Eight Championship under Sonny. In 1974 he was Vice President and General Manager of the Detroit Wheels, a newly formed professional football team in the World Football League. He was inducted into the MSU Athletic Hall of Fame. Sonny was one of the 1999 Michigan State University Homecoming Parade Marshall's.
