- Harvey attended Bernice School near Melita, Manitoba, Canada for grades 1 through 8, took correspondence courses for grades 9 and 10, then attended High School in Melita. Harvey rented some land in 1949 and tried farming. That fall, he left for Winnipeg and worked maintaining an outdoor skating rink. The next spring (1950) he was a door to door vacuum cleaner salesman and after three months with no sales decided he was not cut out for sales. He then worked in McLeods warehouse, then got a job with the CPR Telegraph installing telegraph lines in the muskeg of eastern Manitoba. In May of 1952 he started work, in Chalk River, for Atomic Energy of Canada. At the suggestion of the company, in 1955, he started attended the University of Manitoba and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Was a Nuclear Engineer with Atomic Energy of Canada and Ontario Hydro. Worked at Ontario Hydro's Nuclear Power station at Pickering, Ontario, Canada.
