  • Notes
    • aka Nero and Bub. From Jean Hoffmann (a Connell descendent from Heidelberg, Ontario, Canada) who visited with Harold; "They usually got prizes for the best yard with all their flowers. He enjoyed his cottage and was an avid golfer." Harold was educated at Stony Creek School and in Neepawa, Manitoba, Canada. Harold taught school at Osprey School, Manitoba 1934-38. He then became a civil servant by obtaining employment in the Neepawa Land Titles Office on December 1, 1938 where he worked until he retired on October 2, 1981 (except for serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII). He started playing drums with Kelly's Orchestra in 1935 in the Orange Hall on Saturday nights. He played with other orchestras including "Black Hawks" big band and with Ed Kuharski for fifteen years, retiring from band playing in 1974. Was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church in Neepawa and sang in the choir for many years. He held many positions in the church. Lived at 335 Lily Street, Neepawa and had a cottage at Clear Lake, Manitoba. Harold is buried in Lot 2, Block 6, Range 4, Riverview Cemetery, Neepawa.

His father died when William was six and the family moved in with his grandparents on their farm. William excelled in hockey and track and field in high school. He acquired the nickname Nero when at age 18 was put in charge of a thrashing gang. One worker said "who do you think you are, King Nero?" and he replied "you're darn right and you had better remember it." He was Nero ever after. He got the nickname Bub when he decided he was not old enough to be called Gramps by his grandchildren. He had a special and caring relationship with Marge Sandercock for 22 years and they were renowned in the district for their dancing skills and talent. Funeral was held at Knox Presbyterian Church in Neepawa, Manitoba with Rev. Gladys Anderson officiating. White's Funeral Home were in care of arrangements. (From William's obituary).

Visited Mary Thomson in Minto Township, Ontario in 1922 with his mother, brother and sister. He was reported to be a very nice boy.
