2910 | The following has been summarized from a book "A Backward Look at the Forefolk of Lord Thomson of Fleet and North Bridge" published in London, England in 1976. Lord Thomson retained William A. Porter to research the Thomson family in Scotland and Canada. The period covers a time frame from the 1400's to the children of Andrew Thomson 1715-1772 and Jannett Scott and is set in the Eskdale Valley in Southern Scotland. (P1) ** The (P1) refers to the page number in the book where the information was found. John and Robert Hyslop, local historians and authors of "Langholm As It Was" report that the Thomson family resided around the Westerkirk Parish, (Eskdale Valley along the Esk River) Dumfriesshire, Scotland from at least 1470. (P1) The Parish of Westerkirk is an area of scattered farms and the hamlet of Bentpath and is located just across the border from England, five miles north west of Langholm, Scotland. (P10) In a Justice Court of King James IV held in Eskdale on August 13, 1504, a John Thomson of Bonese was fined for non appearance at court and another Thomson was among a group convicted of theft, sheep stealing and treasonable deeds and who were hanged. (P8) Properties most closely linked to the Thomson's in Eskdale Valley were Bonese, Netherknock, Midknock, and Knock. Most of the land was owned by the Duke of Baccleuch. Much intermarriage took place between the Thomson's and their neighbors the Beatties, Armstrongs, Littles, Glenndinnings, Grahams, Christies and Johnstones. (P2 & 15) The Thomson clan of Eskdale Valley do not seem to have had a chief but rode with the Beatties and Armstrongs in the mid 1500's. They are listed as taking part in border raids in the 1540's and 1550's, and in the raid on Stirling in 1571. (P1 & 4) Clans flourished through to 1603 and the union of the crowns. Many Thomson's appear to have wanted to serve England and therefore English parishs near the border, especially Carlisle have a heavy concentration of Thomson's. They also spread to Roxburgh, Selkirk and Kirkcudbright districts. The main stem of the Thomson family remained in Westerkirk Parish but branches moved to nearby Middlebie, Hoddam and Annan. (P11) The last Thomson to live in Westerkirk Parish was Mary Isabella Thomson born 1876 at Bonese, died a spinster on July 21, 1955 at Lochmaben, Scotland. (P10) The first Thomson to emigrate to the new world in 1773 was Archibald Thomson, 1749-1819. Two of his brothers, Andrew, 1751-1823 and David, 1763-1834 followed Archibald to York, Upper Canada in 1796. One sister, Helen and three other brothers, William, John and Richard stayed in Scotland. | Thomson, James (I7483)

2913 | The Letter of Petition of Mary McKay is undated but the approval is dated Feb 25 1800. It was possibly prepared a couple of years after Hugh's death. Elizabeth's Petition was prepared Feb 6 1797. This would mean that Hugh died in 1795/6. I will search the Quebec Gazette for this period to see if there is an obituary for Hugh McKay. Mary McKay lists her children as Deborah, Mary, Isabella, Jane, Bridget, Martha, Barbara, George and Archibald (it likely does not state her married or independent children). According to records in the Church of Scotland in Quebec, George was christened / born Nov 16 1780 as George David Hugh and Archibald was christened / born December 6 1789 as Archibald William. It is difficult to tell from the records whether they listed the birth or the christening date. Elizabeth named her first female child Mary after her Mother. The Archibald, named as one of Mary McKay's children was likely named after her son-in-law Archibald Thomson. Elizabeth and Archibald Thomson were married in Quebec City August 2 1781, eight years before Mary's Archibald was born. You will note that Mary applies for a total of 3000 acres for herself and her children in the Township of Burford, which is south of Sherbrooke in The Eastern Townships. The Committee states that they will grant the request for land on the north bank of the Ottawa River. Elizabeth did NOT mean that her father was dead , only that he was previously a Sergeant of the 8th Regiment. In view of this I have come to the conclusion that Hugh McKay was alive at the time Elizabeth's Petition was written and he was the Sergeant at Arms in the Quebec Assembly. There family therefore consisted of Mary died before the petitions were granted and her sons George and Archibald were minors. They were under the guardianship of Deborah and George Bently. Being a minor It would be necessary for George and Archibald to give an Oath of Allegiance prior to receiving their land grant. The Land Petitions of Mary Mckay on behalf of herself and her nine children were requested to be in Barford Township, which is south of Sherbrooke Quebec. The Land Committee stated that she may receive 1200 acres and each of her nine children 200 acres in a Township on the North Bank of the Ottawa River. In a letter of petition dated December 16 1801 Mary McKay along with her children and other petitioners state that the Government Surveyor reports that the tract of land on the north bank of the Ottawa River is unfit for agriculture. They therefore request that they receive their grant from land in Tring Township. For some reason or other Mary was then granted 600 acres and each of the nine children 200 in Tring Township , which is south of Quebec City.Their lots were located on the 2nd and 3rd Range Lots 1 through 13. I can account for all the children's grants with the exception of Mary. However there is a Mary Douglas that received Lot 1 Range 3 - 200 acres which could be Mary McKay. From the records of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Quebec City we find that George Donald Hugh McKay was baptized / born November 16 1788. Archibald William was baptized / born December 6 1789. It is uncertain whether they recorded the birth date or the baptism date. There was an Ann McKay who married a William Moore on March 11 1789 who may have been another daughter. Deborah McKay married John Bently , widower, December 21 1799. Donald Flowers has informed me that the 8th Regiment came to America about 1763 so it is possible that all of their children were born in Canada. | Embling, Mary (I12321)

2923 | There are two empty plots, one on each side of the graves, that were for the two boys if they wanted or needed them. The headstone is over Clarissa's grave at her head and Louis is interred on her right (the viewer's left). The headstone reads: In memory of CLARISSA A. SANDERSON Oct 21 1863 Dec 6 1948 Beloved wife of LOUIS ROBERTSON Sept 18 1872 Sept 14 1951 Peace Perfect Peace Louis left home in England at the age of 12 for reasons unknown and earned his passage to America on a sailing vessel while working as the captain's cabin boy. After landing (probably at New York City) he signed on again for a voyage around Cape Horn to the west coast of America. He landed (probably at San Francisco) and was discharged with the captain's written recommendation to be taken on as an "Able Bodied Seaman" if he ever went to sea again-he never went. On his way East, he stayed at a cabin in the Rockies where he made his own skis by forming the curved tips between the logs of the cabin walls. Somehow, he got to Pennsylvania and worked for a Dutch farmer (probably an Amish farmer) for a year or two. He was there long enough to learn a little German. It was a case of "Learn to speak German or you won't eat!". His next stop was Canada and the beginning of his family life. He had sown his wild oats! Louis had many real-life stories for his grandchildren at bedtime. Everything from hand cutting wine bottle corks as a boy in England to catching sharks and flying fish at sea. Some of his tales were so intriguing that they became standard fare and were repeated time after time by popular request. He was a gentle man, and within his means, a generous man. He loved a good game of chess with his grandson, Roy, and a smoke now and then. Have family movie from 1930-40 in family file. | Robertson, Louis (I7406)
