2004 | Ethel wrote the first “Genealogical Chart of Descendants of David Thomson and Mary Glendinning” in 1958. In the preface she wrote: For many years it has been my fondest dream to compile a book of the David Thomson Descendants, and as the saying goes nothing ventured, nothing gained. The descendants are scattered all over the North American Continent, and it has been impossible to contact every one, so this list is far from complete, and there may even be errors in the names and dates. Even though I have done all the writing, typing and talking, much of the credit goes to my husband Hughbert MacPherson, who has willingly driven several hundred miles, and sat patiently in the car for hours at a time, while I interviewed the people for names and dates. Many, many hours have been spent on this project, but every minute has been a pleasure, and so all good things must come to an end. Ethel MacPherson, February, 1958. Brooklin, Durham, Ontario, Canada. Ethel began her collecting as far back as 1944. Long before the use of computers, recording her findings on a typewriter. She was asked to publish her work as a tribute for the opening of the David and Mary Collegiate in Scarborough, Ontario in 1958. Ethel continued to obtain information after the book was published the last entries in her notes were in 1972, the year she passed away. 2006 | Ezekiel and Seth were pioneer settlers in Somerville. Baptized at about 19 at a meeting held by the evangelist Rev. Clark Allen, he became a staunch adherant to the Free Christian Baptist Church. He was ordained 15 March 1840. He farmed during the week and laboured for the Lord Sundays. At the time of his death he was believed to be the oldest clergyman in Canada. Dr. Turner , in his Shaw book, said: Ezekiel Sipprell and his younger brother Seth were pioneer settlers in Somerville (Carleton Co., N.B.). We are told that, in later years, he loved to relate "how the two poled up the river in a canoe with a gallon of molasses, a bag of cornmeal, their guns and axes. Landing just opposite where Hartland now stands, they began cutting birch timber." On their first clearing they sowed wheat and from two acres raised 101 bushels, which took the King's bounty for that year. For several years they lived alone in a little hut. A pleasant family tradition states that, as a lad, he was visiting Nathaniel Shaw's family and idly rocking the cradle wherein lay their first child, Letitia. Someone began teasing young "Zekel" asking him when he was going to get married. "I'm going to wait for 'Tishie'," he is said to have replied. And he did just that. He waited some sixteen years and married her in 1833. We are told that, after the wedding, he took her up behind him on his horse and galloped off to their new home. Baptized at about nineteen at a meeting held by the noted evangelist Rev. Clark Allen, the "New Light" Preacher, he became a staunch adherent of what came to be known as the Free Christian Baptist Church. He was ordained 15 March 1840. At the time of his death, he was believed to be the oldest clergyman in Canada. 2010 | Family tradition maintains that the Siprell family was of French Huguenot descent but nothing of their ancestry is known for certain. Many Huguenots fled France during the persecution. Many religious refugees from these countries came to America seeking that religious freedom promised by William Penn. Between 1727 and 1776 over 68,000 came. Included were many Huguenots from Alsace and Lorraine. Lancaster County is located in the very centre of the area settled by the refugees. A careful check of the William Penn Memorial Archives and the libraries of historical societies in Wiles-Barre (Wyoming Valley) and Lancaster has yielded the following. In the Penn Archives is preserved an indenture dated 5 October 1762 between a Jacob Downer of Lampiter Twp., Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania and William Siprel of Mountjoy Twp., Lancaster Co. for the sale of lot no. 48 in May Town. (May Town was so named because it was founded on 1 May 1762) William and his wife, Rebeka, sold this property to an Abraham Etter, 18 May 1774. Tax rolls show him resident in Donegal Twp. as late as 20 August 1777. A Revolutionary War roll shows a William Siprol enrolled 1 Oct 1777.(1) Another roll of the Continental Line shows a William Siprile discharged 28 Jan 1780. Also Pennsylvania. John B. Linn and Wm. H. Egle, M.D. Pennsylvania Archives, Second Series, Vol XI : Lane S. Hart, State Printer, 1880 (2) Under date of 16 Sept. 1965, a grand-daughter of Seth, Mrs. Helen Beck received from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission this certificate. "To whom it may concern: This is to certify that one Wm Siprill served a tour of duty at Lancaster during the period July 1-23, 1781, as a substitute for Urly Tanner in Lieutenant James Cook's Company of the Third Class, seventh Battalion, Lancaster County Militia, according to the evidence of a Muster Roll dated 1781. (3) Wm. H. Work, Chief, Division of Public Records" There was also evidence that William enlisted in the 1812 war with the Pennsylvania militia. 2035 | Father: George Washington Hatfield b: 27 Dec 1838 in Carleton Co, NB Mother: Emily C Holmes b: 22 Mar 1840 in Wakefield, NB Hatfield potatoes found their way all over North and South America and, "at the peak ofhis career his company was shipping 25,000 cars of potatoes a year", Fred recalled, adding"and thats a lot of potatoes".Hatfield operated a starch factory during World War 1, and he "is given credit as one ofthe first people in North America to manufacture white starch". At the time, all starch wasbrown, and Hatfield developed the purer variety with the help of his nephew, Dr. GeorgeHatfield. He was also a pioneer in the field of potato dehydration. Fred commented that "you mightnot serve them on the best table, but the British government considered them good enoughto feed their army around the world".Hatfield, though, did not confine himself to the potato industry alone. He also madecheese, ran a lumber business and a furniture company, operated a fox farm, kept hens andsheep, published two newspapers, and was at one time or another president of HartlandElectric Company, J.W. Boyer, and the Maine Potato Products. However, business was not always brisk. Fred recalled, "the night in 1929 that he camehome and had supper just like always. About half way through the mealhe said, 'Oh, by theway, we lost everything we had today'. My mother later told me that we lost about one halfmillion dollars. My father didn't get upset. He just said I did it once and I can do it again, and kept right on eating."Hatfield's philosophy about money changed after the '29 crash. Until then he had devotedhimself to amassing a personal fortune, but after that "money meant nothing to him", Fredsaid. "He invested his money to create jobs in the area and he even started businesses upand literally gave them away".On the civic side of his life's ledger, Hatfield was equally busy. He was mayor of Hartlandfrom 1928-32, and acted as warden of Carleton County from 1940-41. As well, he was adirector of the Fisher Memorial Hospital for many years, a director of the New BrunswickProtestant Orphanage, and was the president and one of the founding members of theGreenwood Cemetery Company. However, he played his most important role in the Houseof Commons. He was first elected in March, 1940, in the riding of Victoria-Carleton, taking the seataway from the incumbent Liberal. | Hatfield, Herber Harold (I630)
