1824 Cause of death: Heart disease.

May have been from his father's previous marriage. (wife unknown)

John was baptised on June 22, 1825, Westerkirk, Scotland. Emigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1850 (as noted in the 1901 Ontario Census). In the 1851 Census for Upper Canada, (Blenheim Township, Oxford County Part 1, Page 97, Line 28, Microfilm C-11745), John Thomson is listed as being 25 years old and living with the John Darling family. Mr. Darling was a Rail Road Contractor and John Thomson was a labourer. John Thomson must have been working, building railroads (the Grand Trunk Railroad was built around this time) and moving around may be the reason the first four children were born in various places. Married Adeline Elliott April 6, 1852 after proclaimation of banns, in the United Presbyterian Church in Canada by Minister Geo. Murray. Witnesses were Benjamin Darling and Hannah Suddaby. (from their wedding certificate). (John Darling had a daughter, Adeline, aged 18 in the 1851 Census. In the marriage registrations for John and Adeline's two oldest children, Annie Thomson and William Thomson, the mother is listed as Adeline Darling. Where did Adeline Elliott come from?). Mabel (Smith) Kriter thought John and Adeline married in Drumbo, Ontario. They appear to have lived in Canning, Paris, Drumbo and Clinton before settling in Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario. They had four sons and six daughters and one child that died in infancy. Purchased Lots 36 and 37 (202 acres), Concession 4, Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario at Crown Lands sale held in Elora, Ontario on September 10 - 11, 1854. The land cost 7 shillings 6 pence ($1.50) per acre. They did not occupy the land until March 1860. (He may have negotiated the purchase at Elora. He may also have started living on the property in 1860 to help the potential owner fulfill the requirements of clearing and building to receive the Crown Patent. A spinster, Hannah Sunley received the Crown Patent on April 18, 1870. An Indenture to Purchase the property by John Thomson was made on May 12, 1870 and the Deed was registered on June 18, 1870. {Archives of Ontario microfilm GS3236, pages 142 & 143 show the Abstracts to Deeds and microfilm GS3242 shows Deed 910}). His son Robert Archibald took over the farm and farmed it until his death. Death Registration 031865, Archives of Ontario microfilm MS935 Reel 133. John suffered from heart disease for two years and was under the care of Dr. A. Stewart. Informant was Richard Bride. Buried in Plot CC-1-37F, Harriston Cemetery. The Orillia Times Newpaper February 15, 1906 reported Miss R. Thomson of Netherby and Miss A. Walker of Creighton were spending the week as guests of Uncle John of Harriston, Minto Township. (Netherby Farms was the name of the farm of John's sister, Janet Thomson of South Orillia, Simcoe County, Ontario. Creighton is near Coldwater, Medonte Township, Simcoe County, Ontario, where John's sister Margaret Walker and John's brother George, lived).

The properties were "Granted" (sold) to Frederick A. Wood on December 4, 1919 with Elizabeth Thomson holding a $5,000 mortgage. The farm was "Granted" for $8,400 to the next property neighbors, the James Peden Connell Family on 11 March, 1926, whose descendents in 2005 continue to operate the farm and rent out the Thomson homestead house. Mary Thomson received final payment on the Frederick Wood mortgage on October 23, 1952.

In the March and April, 1908 issues of the Guelph Daily Mercury, W. F. MacKenzie wrote articles about the early Minto Township families and reported: "John Thompson, a native of Roxborough, Scotland, purchased Lots 36 & 37, Concession 4 at the sale in 1854, but did not settle on his farm until about 1860. This intelligent and prosperous farmer was a highly esteemed pioneer of this community. Of his family, Mrs. Baird, William, David and John are in the west; Mrs. Chandler in Dakota; Mrs. Smith in Minto; Mrs. Craig in Drayton and Robert, Mary and Lizzie on the homestead." (Mrs. Chandler would have to be Mrs. Helen Hewitt and Mrs. Craig would be Mrs. Jane Cragg).

The following is summarized from a story written by Olive Hewitt as told to her by her mother, Helen Thomson. "John Thomson came to Canada at age 21 (that would have been in 1844). He came from a large family in Scotland and a relative, Ann Hardy (Harding), a very wealthy woman adopted him. John was to inherit her estate, Burnese (Bonesse) but relatives convinced Ann Hardy that John was dead so she transferred the land to them. Helen Thomson always thought they would be going back to Scotland to live until she was 15 years old when Ann Hardy died." "The cousins who cheated him out of his property lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba and owned property known as Ravenscourt, a boys' school. It went back to the Government as no heirs came forth to claim it." These stories have not been confirmed. Sherman Gauley, Olive Hewitt's son doubts very much that the storiea are true. The Thomson's in Scotland were tenant farmers, they did not own any land.

On June 24, 2001, Wayne Thomson had the privilege of meeting Jim and Audrey Connell, the current owners of the Thomson farm. They got permission from their tenant to allow me to visit the house. 2 1/2 story, yellow brick with an attic. The entire house, except the kitchen still have the original doors, frames and baseboards. The house appeared to still be solid but could use some restoration work. It was a great pleasure to have seen the house. When the Connell family purchased the farm, they moved into the house and lived there for years. The 1875 (1895?) original barn is still in use today. Mabel (Smith) Kriter believed that the house was built around 1903. (reported in John Albert Thomson's information is that the house was build before he left home in 1899).
Thomson, John (I6297)

1825 Cause of death: Old age. Age 94 years 1 1/2 months. Informant of death: DavidThompson, son.

Was christened 19 November 1826 in Westerkirk Parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Had two other children who died in infancy? Emigrated to Canada in 1872 and birth date October 22, 1826 came from 1901 Ontario Census. Was a farmer. (According to Ruth Frances Thomson, William took over the Thomson homestead property, Lots 12 & 13 Concession 3. In 1891 the parts of the lots east of the center line of Concession 3 was sold to Her Majesty the Queen, for Ontario Hospital, a mental health facility, later called Huronia Centre. The rest of the property was sold by William's heirs in 1922). Death Registration 034157 Archives of Ontario microfilm MS935 Reel 270. Died of old age under the care of W.C. Gilchrist. Undertaker was D. Clarke.

On March 9, 1867 Archibald Thomson paid off the mortgage on west half of Lot 13, Concession 3, South Orillia Township, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada to Isabella Patterson. On June 21, 1867 Archibald Thomson bought the east half of Lot 13, Concession 3, Orillia South Township from Jas. Nieckie. On April 7, 1873 Archibald Thomson sold Lot 13, Concession 3, and south west quarter of Lot 12, Concession 3, Orillia South Township to his brother William Thomson for $4,000. On the probate registration of William Thomson's Will on September 26, 1922, title of these properties was transferred to Donald Thomson. An 1881 Atlas of Simcoe County show A. Thomson as the owner of these properties. In neither case do the records viewed indicate when Archibald Thomson originally purchased some of the above properties. (Archives of Ontario microfilm GS 5464).

The Weekly Times Orillia dated December 16, 1920 (Archives of Ontario microfilm N39 Reel 61) reported:
THOMSON - At South Orillia, on December 13, William Thomson, in his 95th year.
(also from the collection of Janet Marilyn (Parsons) Mason)
The Weekly Times Orillia dated December 23, 1920 (Archives of Ontario microfilm N39 Reel 61) reported:

The funeral was held last Thursday afternoon to St. Andrew's cemetery. Rev. N.H. McGillivray conducting the service. The pallbearers were Messrs. James W. Thomson, Thos. S. Thomson, Wm. Dunn, Gordon Dunn, John Graham, and Wm. Thomson. Mr. Thomson's wife died twenty years ago. His family of four sons and four daughters survive, David P., Robert and Donald, of South Orillia; John, in England; Mrs. David Dunn, South Orillia; Misses Jessie and Annie at home; and Mrs. Wm. Graham, Little Creek. Two sisters also are living, Mrs. Simon Thomson, South Orillia; and Mrs. Dan Walker, Medonte."

William's Will dated June 24, 1910 was applied for probate #10989 September 19, 1922 by David Park Thomson (Robert Thomson also was an Executor but he passed away before probate). (Archives of Ontario microfilm MS1387). Real Estate held by William was part W1/2 Lot 10 Concession 4, South Orillia Township (1/2 acre where William lived) and parts of Lots 12, 13 & 14 Concession 3, South Orillia Township (containing 175 acres). Daughters Jessie and Annie received part W1/2 Lot 10 Concession 4 South Orillia Township. Son Donald received parts of Lots 12, 13 & 14 Concession 3, South Orillia Township currently occupied by David P. Thomson as Tenant, subject to paying Jessie and Annie $1,000.00 each, David P. $500.00 and daughters Margaret Dunn and Christine Graham $250.00 each. 1830 Charles Close was a character! He spent a great deal of his lifeconspiring to get out of work. He was a bootlegger and bookie for much ofhis life in Toronto. He worked from time to time, but mostly enjoyed thecompany of rounders and horse players.
Chuck had an irreverent sense of humour, and loved to tease peopleand give them nicknames.
Close, Charles Samuel (I14753)

1831 Charles is not found in UK census for 1851. It is assumed (by me) that the family left England prior to 1851. Charles (and Susannah's family) is not found in the 1851 Canadian census. This is probably due to missing records for Scarborough Twp. Although I find several Sanderson families from England with likely dates in Markham Twp., nothing can be confirmed without Scarborough data. Their own family is recorded in the Canadian 1861/71/81 census for Scarborough.
