1759 | Came to Canada when he was about 5 years old to Palmerston, Wellington County, Ontario. John's age was listed as 30 in his Marriage Registration in 1878. That would make his birth year 1848. He was a farmer on Concession 2, Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario Canada. (Minto Atlas 1881 shows J. Baird on Lot 30, Concession 3). In 1879 moved to North Dakota. In the 1880 US Census, John is listed as being born in Scotland in 1845, age 35, farmer, married, white, parents both born in Scotland, Census place was Drayton, Pembina, Dakota Territory, Family History Library Film 1254114, NA File #T9-0114, page 81A. John made a trip to Ontario in January 1896 (letter is in Agnes Baird's scrapbook). In 1904 purchased a large farm south of Lumsden, Saskatchewan, Canada (in the Southcote District) from his daughter and son-in-law Fanny and James Glendinning. They lived with their daughter Fanny when they arrived in Lumsden until they were able to occupy the house they purchased from William Smith. Mr. Smith later built their big house just above the former home. John was active in community affairs and particularly the building and planning of the Presbyterian Church in Lumsden (which is now the United Church). John died in his home with Annie and daughter Agnes there. John's funeral service has held in his residence. John did not leave a will. According to www.glorecords.gov (then search land patents) John Baird received Land Patents on 13 February 1884, North Dakota, County Walsh, from Montana State Office, Document #6211 Accession/Serial #NDMTAA104601 for 160 acres of S1/2 NE Section 1 and N1/2 SE Section 1, Township 157N, Range 55W, West 5th Principal Meridian. John Baird received Land Patent on 18 October 1886, North Dakota, County Walsh, from Montana State Office, Document #3677 Accession/Serial #NDMTAA100695 for 160 acres of SE Section 7, Township 157N, Range 54W, West 5th Principal Meridian. Following courtesy of Lorne Wallace Glendinning from Agnes Helen Baird's scrapbook: (from a North Dakota newspaper) Mr. John Baird, who has made Walsh county his home for the last twenty-four years, left Grafton last Friday morning for the Northwest territory with his family. Mr. Baird had a splendid farm east of Park River and ideal home and farm buildings, and it must have been with regret that he leaves the old home, and his neighbors and friends are exceedingly sorry to have the family go. Mr. Baird tells us he is making the move in the interest of his boys. They have taken up and bought a large piece of land in Canada and we hope they will do well and be satisfied with their new home. Following courtesy of Lorne Wallace Glendinning from Agnes Helen Baird's scrapbook: Death of Mr. John Baird During the past winter months the presence of Mr. John Baird was absent from our streets. For a week or more the family expected his departure from among them. Monday afternoon he passed away to the Great Beyond, mourned by his wife and family, all of whom were present on the sad occasion. The late John Baird was a native of Ayrshire, Scotland, and when about five years of age came to Canada, locating at Palmerston, Wellington County, Ontario. Here he resided, when he was married, until 1879, when he left for North Dakota, where he continued to reside until 1904, when he purchased a farm a few miles south of Lumsden. Shortly afterward he took up his residence in Lumsden where he has continued to reside ever since. At the time of is death he was in his 68th year. His family comprised three sons and three daughters, all of whom reside in the west, and are: Mrs. Glendinning, Strassburg, Mrs. John Pettigrew and James, Lumsden, Ernest of Hawarden, Robert of Duval and Miss Agnes at Lumsden. | Baird, John (I6311)
