1485 | Among the early settlers of what is now New England were the family of Reginald Foster from Devonshire, England. Four generations later, Ezekiel and Mary (Fogg) Foster were the parents of at least five sons and a daughter, Sarah. Sarah was known in the family as Sally. She married William Sr. and thus became the maternal ancestor of the Sipprell family. From their original settlement in Ipswich, Massachusetts the Fosters spread along the eastern coast and eventually, mid eighteenth century, reached Scarboro, Maine and later at the mouth of the Machias River. After the outbreak of the Revolution, the Fosters were actively in support of those in the Thirteen Colonies. Within a year, the British compelled allegiance. Ezekiel and a number of Fosters from Maine were Pre-Loyalists in the Machias River area. They had appealed to both Nova Scotia and Massachusetts for a township grant. Boston granted the request in 1770. Following the American Revolution many had their land taken by Loyalists. On file at Fredericton is a petition dated 8 August 1789 endorsing "Ezekiel Foster and his three sons ask for lots No. 19, 20, 21, 22 SE side of the Oromocto Welch's Survey. The lots formerly registered but unimproved". They were granted the New Brunswick land. By August 1789 Ezekiel Foster and family had arrived. | Foster, Sarah (Sally) (I71)

1497 | Andrew came to Canada in 1796 along with his brother David. He was accompanied by his second wife Jean and daughter. He initially came to Newark (now Niagara on the Lake) and later moved to the new capital of Upper Canada, York (now Toronto). As a stone mason he assisted in the construction of the new parliament buildings. Later in 1798, he followed his brother David to settle in Scarborough clearing land and creating a homestead, which he named Springfield. There he served in the administration of the community. He was elected Town Warden amd was pound keeper. A petition for additional land, was submitted by Andrew in 1799. Most illuminating are the descriptions which these documents give. Andrew was described as: 'Blue eyes, brown hair, about 5 ft 11 inches high, 50 years of age'. Four children were born in Scotland, two born in Town of York and three born in Scarborough. Andrew and Jean's daughter, Mary, married her first cousin Christopher Thomson, son of William Thomson and Anna Little. Andrew is buried in St Andrew's Presbyterian Cemetery (Bendale) Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. | Thomson, Andrew (I5877)
