1353 aka Jim. James homesteaded on SE Section 20, Township 12, Range 23, West 2nd Meridian (from Archives of Canada) at Rouleau, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1904 (Annie Emma (Baird) Hagerty said Hearne). The Village of Avonlea started while he was there and was a mile from his farm. In 1908 moved to Lumsden, Saskatchewan, Canada after getting married and farmed three miles south of Lumsden. Moved to Keystown, Saskatchewan in 1931 and farmed there. He also farmed a quarter section north west of Lumsden. James lost horses during the 1930's because of the drought. He used to support the horses so they would stay on their feet by a big belt under their stomachs, tied to the ceiling. In 1945 they retired to 1040 Retallack Street, Regina, Saskatchewan. Celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1958 with a reception and family dinner at the home of their son John W. Baird. Their bridesmaid, Mrs. E. Morton of Gibbs and best man, Ernest Baird of Saskatoon were in attendance as well as all members of their family. Buried in Christus Garden, Lot 347, Grave C-2 Regina Memorial Gardens.

Lived there 1 June 1904 - 10 December 1904; 1 May 1905 - 15 December 1905; 1 May 1906 - 21 January 1907. Was single. In 1904 broke 15 acres. In 1905 broke additional 60 acres and had 15 acres in crop. In 1906 broke additional 45 acres and had 75 acres in crop. In 1904 & 1905 had 3 horses, in 1906 & 1907 had 5 horses. In 1907 had a frame house 12' X 22', $117, a frame stable 16' X 24', 2 granaries and a well. Application signed and sworn 31 January 1907 in Milestone, Sask., Land Agent recommendation 16 February 1907 in Regina, Sask., Accepted in Ottawa 5 March 1907. Sworn statements by G. Holmes and O.G. Cornwell on 31 January 1907 in Milestone, that James Alexander Baird had lived on and improved the property as stated. Mr. W.R. Forney attempted on 16 April 1914 to get the property back. James Alexander Baird had his original homestead on SE 18-12-23 W2 and abandoned it.

MR. AND MRS. J.A. BAIRD CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. James A. Baird, 1040 Retallack Street celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 30, 1958 at the home of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Baird. A reception was held in the afternoon followed by a family dinner.
Mrs. E. Morton and Mrs. Ernest Baird were in charge of the register and performing the tea honors were Mrs. J. Bell, Mrs. W. Blackstock, and Mrs. P. McTavish. Serving were Mrs. W. Downie, Mrs. N. Penfold, Mrs. E. Fraser, Mrs. C. Glendinning. Mrs. W. Glendinning, Mrs. L. Hart and Mrs. D. Bryden.
The table was beautifully arranged with a lace cloth and centered with a three tiered wedding cake embedded in gold tuile with gold tapers on either side. Mrs. Baird wore a two piece midnight blue dress with a corsage of Talisman roses.
The honored couple were presented with gold watches from the family together with numerous other gifts and flowers. All members of the family were present. They are Mrs. J. (Mary) Barmby of Lang; John of Regina; Mrs. A. (Annie) Haggerty of Moose Jaw; Norman of Radisson; and Mrs. A. (Fannie) Harvey of Regina. There are 11 grandchildren.
Special guests were Mrs. E. Morton of Gibbs and Ernest Baird of Saskatoon, bridesmaid and bestman at the wedding 50 years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Baird were married Dec. 23, 1908 at Gibbs and they farmed in the Lumsden and Keystown districts until they retired in 1945 to Regina.
Out-of-town guests came from Gibbs, Kenaston, Lang, Lumsden, Moose Jaw, Radisson, Saskatoon, Stony Beach, Strasbourg and Pense.

BAIRD RITES SATURDAY
Funeral Services for James Alexander Baird, 78 of 1040 Retallack, who died Thursday, will be held in Speers Funeral Chapel Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. W.J. Moore officiating. Burial will be in Regina, Memorial Gardens.
Born in Park River, N.D., Mr. Bard moved to Lumsden in 1904 to farm. In 1908 he married the former Carrie Greenfield.
In 1913 he moved to Keystown where he farmed until retiring to Regina in 1945.
Mr. Baird is survived by his wife, two sons, John, Suite 6, 1610 Alexander and Norman, Meadow Lake; three daughters, Mrs. J.H. Barmby, Lang; Mrs. Archie Hagerty, Moose Jaw; and Mrs. Arthur Harvey, 1412 Grey; a sister, Miss Agnes Baird, Lumsden and 11 grandchildren.

1363 aka Joe. In his marriage registration, Joe was listed as a 32 year old farmer living at 70 Shuter Street, Toronto and a Roman Catholic. Being 32 would make his birth year 1883. Tombstone has 1873. Joseph is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery, old section, grave B-11, Unity, Saskatchewan. (The Town of Unity has no records of Joseph's burial other than his tombstone inscription).

Joseph obtained entry to his homestead property, SW1/4 of Section 19, Township 40, Range 23, West 3 Meridian on November 21, 1908. He occupied his 12'X18' frame house on May 15, 1909. He lived on the property from May 15, 1909 - December 17, 1909; went to Crossland, Ontario for the winter and returned to his property on April 5, 1910 were he lived continuously until applying for the Crown Patent on November 24, 1911. In 1909 he broke 30 acres. In 1910 he broke an additional 35 acres and had crop on 30 acres. In 1911, he broke another 30 acres and had crop on 65 acres. In 1910 he had 2 oxen, in 1911 he had 4 oxen and 1 horse. By November 24, 1911 he had his house, worth $300, a granary worth $200, a stable worth $75, 2 wells worth $50 and had 8 acres fenced. He swore and signed his application for the Crown Patent in Unity, Saskatchewan on November 24, 1911, the Land Agent recommendation was signed in Battleford on December 1, 1911 and was accepted in Ottawa on December 15, 1911. The Patent was issued on February 16, 1912. (Application 1763507 microfilm R8.1050)
Joseph obtained entry to his pre-emption property, SW1/4 35-40-24 W3 on February 12, 1912. He did not live on this property. In 1913 he broke 40 acres. In 1914, he broke another 15 acres and had 40 acres in crop. In 1915 he had 55 acres in crop. In 1916 he broke another 12 acres and had 55 acres in summerfollow. On his original homestead he now had the 12'X18' house plus another one 22'X22' worth $1,700, a barn worth $800, 3 granaries worth $400. In each of 1913, 1914 and 1915 he had 4 cattle. in 1916 he had no cattle but had 4 horses. His wife had lived on the homestead since December 1915. He swore and signed his application for the Crown Patent in Unity, Saskatchewan on February 26, 1917, the Land Agent recommendation was signed in Battleford on July 26, 1917 and was accepted in Ottawa on August 22, 1917. The Patent was issued on January 19, 1918. (Application 2143254 microfilm R8.1273). (Joseph was listed as a 44 year old farmer of Unity, Saskatchewan. This would make his birth year 1873).

1380 aka Ken. Ken attended Balfour Technical School in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1945-47, grades 10-11 (was in the Sea Cadets in the 45-46 term and took special drafting in the 46-47 term). He stayed briefly with the Goodmurphy family and then with the Spooner Family who lived on the north side of Regina. He was engaged at one point to Ann Audrey Goodmurphy. Ken lived in Winnipeg. In the early 1950's, he trained pilots and his cousin, Robert Gauley worked on the mechanics of the planes. He worked for Bird Construction in Winnipeg, then formed his own construction company. He owned (with partners) and built Moore Lake Lodge (log cabin construction). He had his own plane to get to Moore Lake Lodge. In 1971 was living in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada when his mother died. Ken and his wife Barbara separated but never divorced. Ken and Joyce Westburg had a son, James. Ken and James had a cottage at Pitt Lake, B.C. and they had two boats. In July 1984, was living at 6010 - 224th Street, Langley, British Columbia. Lived in White Rock, British Columbia. Was living with Donna when he passed away. Died at his cottage at Pitt Lake.
From Ken's daughter Barbara Joan (Shaver) Schwann: Ken was tall, dark, handsome and had lots of personality. Owned his own business, Associated Project Management in British Columbia. He designed buildings as well as did his own contracting. He build many buildings in the lower British Columbia mainland (automobile dealerships, a funeral home in Comox, B.C.). Was interested in photography and had his own darkroom. Made bronze sculptures (had his own foundry on the Langley property). He painted, made jewelry and played the guitar. Was interested in travel, especially Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil and Africa; he invested in a travel agency. He was a pilot and had his own Cessna on floats. Ken suffered a stroke and never regained consciousness. By nature he was extremely generous; one of those people you could tell anything to and expect the best advice. He was very good at keeping secrets and had many friends.

Lance was a truck consultant to the USA Army during the construction of the Alaska Highway. He met Donald Clark Amos (descendant of the Robert Thomson branch) who was civilian Chaplain to the highway construction crew in 1943-44. Was living in Toronto in 1935 when his father died. Lance served oversea in World War I. Joined General Motors in 1927 and became a salesman who had a fantastic record of selling a truck a day for eleven years. He became Manager of G.M. Canada Truck Retail Branch in Toronto and worked as consultant to the U.S. War Department in WWII. Was technical advisor to the General responsible for building the Alaska Highway in 1942, 1422 miles from Fairbanks, Alaska and Dawson Creek, British Columbia. Was an accomplished speaker and writer. Interests included baseball, Hackney horses (owned many in his stables in Durham), helping handicapped children and writing humorous articles. In 1951 he was considered one of Canada's best dressed men.

In 1945 and 1950 (John L.) was Branch Manager General Motors Products and living in Durham, Ontario (also in 1950 he was General Manager Truck Division General Motors Products, residing at the King Edward Hotel). In 1957 J. Lance was General Manager Truck Division General Motors Products of Canada and living at 614 - 1 Benvenuto Place.

BAIRD - The death of Lawrence MacNaughton Baird age 66 years of 838 McKercher Drive, Saskatoon occurred suddenly at home on July 3, 1979. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 6th at 1:30 p.m. from the Chapel of Saskatoon Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Don Laing. (In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, 305 Central Chambers Building, Saskatoon would be appreciated). Surviving are: his loving wife Christina; a sister, Mrs. Doris Deaver of Saskatoon; two brothers, Bob and Jack of Kenaston. Mr. Baird was born at Hawarden, Saskatchewan and lived there until 1929 when he moved to Kenaston. He had farmed in the district until 1978. Interment will take place in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Was a missionary to the Japanese. She was an Anglican Missionary, a Deaconess. Was cremated. Her tombstone states "Friend of the Japanese". Buried with her parents.

Mrs. John T. Johnstone
The death of Mrs. John T. Johnstone occurred at her home in North Lansdale, Vancouver, on Monday, February 20, following several years of ill health borne with remarkable cheerfulness and patience.
Mrs. Johnstone, formerly Margaret Ann Thomson, was born in 1876, and was a daughter of the late Robert Thomson and Mary Cameron, pioneer settlers at Forest Home, South Orillia, and was married on April 8, 1896 to Mr. J.T. Johnstone. They moved West in 1904 and have lived there ever since. Surviving are her husband, five daughters and two sons; Grace (Mrs. Thomas Holmes, Coalmont, B.C.), Margaret (Mrs. Currie Thomson, Mission City, B.C.), Edna and Florence (Mrs. J.P. Dumaresq) Vancouver, Wilma (Mrs. Jas. Meagher, Allison Harbour, B.C.), Thomas and Keith of Vancouver and two sisters Mrs. George Bruce, Vancouver and Mrs. W.A. Amos, Brantford and two brothers Mr. D.C. Thomson and Mr. Will Thomson, Orillia. One son Scott died on July 24, 1935 at the age of nineteen years. There are also twelve grandchildren.

The death of Mrs. Robert Thomson occurred at her home, Forest Home, on Sunday, July 28 in her seventy-ninth year. Margaret Johnstone, who was born near Bass Lake, was a daughter of pioneer settlers, the late Mr. and Mrs. James Johnstone and fifty-six years ago she was married to Mr. Robert Thomson. Mr. Thomson‘s death occurred fourteen years ago, but she leaves three daughters and two sons, Mrs. George Bell, Orillia; Misses. Jessie and Annie Thomson, at home and Messrs. William and James Thomson, Forest Home. There are two grandsons and one granddaughter. One brother is Mr. Robert Johnstone, of Forest Home; Mr. James S. Johnstone, Forest Home, is a half brother and Mrs. Albert Kerr of Vancouver is a half sister. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from the home to St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Orillia. Service was conducted by Rev. J.A. MacInnis of Orillia assisted by Rev. Mr. Wiseman of Hawkstone. The pallbearers were Mrs. Thomson’s two sons and two nephews Messrs. D.T.S. Thomson, Orillia and James MacDonald, Uptergrove."
