In 1900 he headed to Saskatchewan with a friend, William R. Jack settled on N.W. 1/4 of Section 4, Township 6, Range 14, West 2 Meridian and Bill settled on NE 4-6-14, W2. They choose adjoining 1/4 sections of land and built one sod shack straddling the boundary. There was a bunk bed at each end of the shack so they could claim to be living on their own property. One would stay and work both properties while the other one went to Manitoba to work and earn some money. They eventually built their own houses and bought more property. (This property was sold to a Mr. George Culham of Goodwater but the agreement for sale formed part of the Jack's estate and was Susan Ethel Thomson's inheritance from Jack's Will in 1936). Jack returned to Ontario in 1908, married Mabel Ethel Fallis, whose family lived just down the road from the Thomson property, on January 1, 1909 and they traveled out to the homestead in Saskatchewan. In 1909, Jack and three Thackeray brothers, Bill, Bert and Harold bought some South African Script, (this was homestead rights of Boer War Veterans), and headed 200 miles west to the area later known as Milly, Saskatchewan. They claimed their properties and went to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to register them (July 15, 1909) before returning to Thacker. Jack claimed the W1/2 17-5-7 and SE 18-5-7, W3. In 1910, the men returned to Milly and built sod shacks and broke some land, (a requirement of homesteaders). James Albert (Bert) was born on January 7, 1910 at Thacker, Saskatchewan. In 1911, the homestead property at Thacker was sold and they loaded their belongings on to the train, went to Morse, Saskatchewan and then drove, with oxen/wagon and horse/buggy down to Milly, a 70 mile, three day trip. Mabel and one year old Bert rode in the horse and buggy. Mabel was expecting at the time and Robert Allen was born on November 4, 1911. Susan Ethel was born on August 25, 1913. On February 1, 1910 a Post Office opened in Milly (originally called Gravesborough). Jack helped organize the partition to establish Milly School #926 which opened on January 24, 1912. Jack was secretary treasurer. Milly was the first school to open in the area. In 1913 the railroad came through Meyronne which was only 25 miles away, a one day trip each way. They build a frame house in 1914 for $900. In 1915 and 1919, they returned to Ontario for visits. In 1916, they bought a Model-T Ford, the first car in the community, and built a big barn. In 1920 he was nominated for a Master Farmers award. On February 7, 1922, a robber stole a team of horses and burned the barn down (See article following). In the fire they lost nine horses which included two show mares, a $1,300 stallion and thirteen cattle. They were able to rebuild the barn with the insurance money in 1923. (Copy of an Estimate dated June 23, 1922 from D.G. McPhail Lumber & Coal Merchant of Meyronne, Saskatchewan shows the estimated cost of material was $1,956.45). On July 26, 1923 Ben Gordon was born. On August 26, 1929 the railroad came through McCord, only eight miles from the farm (the railroad was discontinued and the tracks removed in 1999). Jack was very community minded. He was a member of the Saskatchewan Grain Growers, the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool and Meyronne Southern Rural Telephone Company. He was a member of Milly Church, Varsity Church and McCord United Church; was on the Board of Stewards of Milly Church and was one of the first trustees; was on the building committee to build the McCord United Church which opened November 11, 1929. He was President and Director of Mankota Waverly Agricultural Society for fifteen years and was Reeve of the Rural Municipality of Mankota for four terms and was Reeve at the time of his death on October 8, 1936. Jack died unexpectedly in Regina after an operation. He may have died from a duodenal ulcer (a bleeding ulcer) which lead to phlebitus (inflammation of the veins). Jack is buried in the Prospect Cemetery south of Ferland, Saskatchewan.

Some additional items of interest have been added to the original article.

The Meyronne Independant Paper, Wednesday February 8, 1922. "J.A. Thomson, progressive farmer of Milly district, had the misfortune to lose his fine large barn with its contents by fire Tuesday night. The fire was discovered at about midnight and had gained such headway that saving the structure or anything it contained was impossible. In the barn at the time of the fire were a number of horses, including Mr. Thomson's fine Percheron stallion, "Barney" and a number of head of cattle, among which was a Government Durham bull which had been secured by several farmers of the district and stationed at the Thomson farm, and all the animals perished in the terrible blaze. A number of cows had been housed in a lean on the building, but these made their exit by way of a door which had been left open. The fire also destroyed all the harness, hay and feed in the barn. While the loss is partly covered by insurance, it is a sever blow to Mr. Thomson and he has the sympathy of his many friends in his misfortune. The barn was one of the largest and best equipped in the south country. The origin of the fire is a mystery." (The fire was arson, set by a robber who stole a prize pair of horses and set the fire to cover his tracks. No one was ever charged and the horses were never found).

Mankota Reeve Buried Saturday
On October 8, John A. Thomson, of McCord district, passed away in Regina General hospital, where he had been taken for medical treatment ten days previously.
He was born in 1879 at Harriston, Ont., where he spent his younger years. Coming west in 1900, he took a homestead seventeen miles south of Weyburn.
In 1909 he married Mabel Fallis, of Harriston.
In 1911 they trekked by wagon train to Milly district, where they made their home and where his wife and four children, Bert, Allen, Ethel and Ben survive him. He is also survived by two brothers, William, of Neepawa, Man., and David, of Lacadena, Sask., and four sisters, Mrs. Annie Baird, Lumsden, Sask., Mrs. Wm. Smith, Palmerston, Ont., and Mary and Elizabeth, Harriston, Ont.
Throughout his twenty fine years' residence in the south country he took a leading part in all activities leading to the up-building of this part of the province. For many years he was president of the Mankota Waverley Agriculture society, of which he was one of the founders, and at the time of his death was reeve of Rural Municipality of Mankota, No. 45.
The funeral service was conducted in McCord United Church, Saturday afternoon by Rev. Wm. Briggs. The beautiful flowers and the large concourse of people attenting the service attested to the high esteem in which deceased was held, not only in his own community but by all who knew him. Pallbearers were M.D. McTaggart, L.L. Walter, J.B. Wilson, Geo. Hamilton, Ed McCrea and Alex MacDonald.
Interment was in Mankota municipal cemetery.
Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were David Thomson, Lacadena; nieces and nephews from Lumsden; Mrs. E.A. Bridger, Regina; Mrs. John Fraser, Weyburn and W.R. Thackeray and family, Palmerston.
Floral tributes were received from the following:
Mrs. Annie Baird and family. J.C. Dunn and family, Rural Municipality of Mankota No. 45, Milly friends, McCord friends, Mrs. McManus and family, Varsity District, Mankota Waverley Agriculture Society, Mrs. Bridger and family, Mr. and Mrs. E. Jenkinson, R.H. Stinson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fraser and family, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Hewitt, the family.

Annie Emma (Baird) Hagerty remembers coming to Jacks funeral in 1936 with Agnes Baird, Agnes' friend George Ross, James Alexander Baird and Mary Ann (Baird) Pettigrew. They took David Thomson of Lacadena back to Lumsden, Saskatchewan so he could have a visit with his sister, Annie (Thomson) Baird. (Interview with Annie Emma Hagerty, August 6, 2002).

On July 23, 2002, Wayne Thomson drove into the area south of Weyburn, Saskatchewan and found Jack Thomson's homestead NW 4-6-14 W2. There are no buildings on the property now, just oil pumps pumping oil out of the ground. The property is right on Highway 39, on the east side, about two miles north of Colgate. Just to confirm I was on the correct property, I drove into a farm yard to inquire. I was rather stunned when I mentioned to the owner, Allan Alexander, that I was the grandson of Jack Thomson, the original owner of NW 4-6-14 W2. He said he knew Jack Thomson's name from his father. I had turned into the farm yard on SW 10-6-14 W2 which had been purchased by Jack Thomson in 1908 and formed part of his estate in 1936. Jack had an agreement of sale on the property with a George Culham and was holding a mortgage. Culham was in arrears in 1936. George Culham was living on the property. In 1941 Hugh Thomas James Alexander rented the SW 10-6-14 W2 from Culham and moved onto the property. Gather payments were made good as in the summer of 1943, Susan Ethel (Thomson) Rear drove into the yard. Ethel wanted to sell so Hugh Alexander offered Culham $300 to sign off on the offer to purchase, there still was $1,600 owing on the mortgage. In 1944 Hugh Alexander purchased the property for $1,000 from Ethel. I met with Hugh Alexander that evening in Weyburn. It was interesting to find this information about Jack Thomson and the properties. Jack and Mabel obviously moved into the existing house on the SW 10-6-14 W2 and James Albert, their oldest son, would have been born in that house. In the 1970's, the Alexander family sold the farm house to neighbors and the house was moved. When Darrell and Joyce Rodine were renovating the house, inside one of the walls they found a book with Jack Thomson's name in it, a seventh prize, Fourth Class, given to Jack on December 20, 1893 by his teacher R. Douglas, an envelope with Jack's name on it and a $2 bill. Allan Alexander made arrangements for me to visit the Rodine's and see the house and the items found in the wall.

Vancouver Sun clipping 10 November 1954 JACK BRUCE
HUGE WAVE SINKS SHIP; 2 MEN LOST
Radio Appeal Last Word From "Salmon Queen"
"Turn about Spray I and stand by. I've taken a huge wave over my stern."
This urgent call was the last sent by skipper Jack Bruce of the ill-fated fish packer Salmon Queen. Seconds later another wave smashed over the stern and sent the vessel and her two-man crew to their graves in Georgia strait, three miles off the Fraser river lightship. The call was heard at 11 p.m. Tuesday by Leo Carter, 25, of 714 Robson, skipper of the fish packer Spray I which was travelling with the 39-foot Salmon Queen. They were moving through a small squall and choppy waters on their way to Steveston to unload their fish cargo. Missing and presumed lost at sea are skipper Bruce, 22, of Westminster Street, Surrey, and his deckhand Fred Orlesky, 19, of 296 River Road, Lulu island, both of B.C. Packers. First word of the tragedy to come was skipper Bruce's call over the radio, "Hello, Spray I, answer right away."......................reporter said today, and he told me of the stern wave, but I never saw his light again. It happened that fast."
