Was a civilian Chaplain to the construction crew building the Alaska highway in 1943-44 known as "the Parka Padre". In 1944-45 was Pastor of Howard Park United Church in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and lived at 3 High Park Gardens. Moved to Bridge Street United Church, Belleville, Ontario from about 1946 to about 1949. From 1950 to 1958 was Pastor at (and responsible for the design and building of) Northlea United Church in Toronto (Leaside) and lived at 647 Broadview Avenue. In 1952, Donald was the summer minister at Lake Joseph Church. From 1959 to about 1966 was Clergyman at Church of the Good Shepherd (Oriole-York Mills United Church, where he was again responsible for the design and building) in Toronto and lived at 56 Rollscourt Drive. From 1960 to 1974 was Pastor at Grace United Church in Brampton, and lived at 13 Golfview Drive (where he was still living in 1979). Retired in 1975. Fully retired in 1977. He founded the "Friar's Briar" in 1977, a bonspiel for Canadian clergy. Was Chaplain of the Ontario Curling Association 1977-79. Was retired supply minister at Sheridan Church south of Mississauga, Ontario and a church in Humber Valley. The family took over Marjorie's parents summer home in 1940 on Lake Joseph, which in 2003 was still in the Amos family. After Marjorie died, Donald married Grace (Michener) (Little) Powell on October 19, 1985 in Emmanuel College Chapel, University of Toronto. Rev. Kingsley J. Joblin officiated. Don was a member of the board of Regents of Victoria College in the University of Toronto from 1966 - 68. Was a charter member of the Chancellor's Council, Victoria University. He was named Member Emeritus of the Inter-Faith Forum on Religion, Art and Architecture, serving the United States and Canada. Don and Grace lived on Graydon Hall Drive in Don Mills (Toronto) and were living at 908-33 Elmhurst Avenue, Willowdale, Ontario before his passing. A family funeral service was held at Turner & Porter Funeral Home, 2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto on August 5, 1994 and a Memorial Service was held in Oriole-York Mills United Church on August 10, 1994. Was cremated. Buried in Park Lawn Cemetery, Section S, E1/2 Lot 1016. Don was an avid collector and recorder of Amos family history and did invaluable work to preserve and add to family records. He was a staunch supporter and strong presence at the annual family reunion. He went out of his way to keep in personal contact with Amos, Thomson and Douglas relatives. His son, Bruce has his records and photographs. Donald died from cancer. Donald and his sons Paul, Bruce and Robert drove up the Alaska Highway, stopping along the way so Donald could visit places from his days there as the Parka Padre. In 1948 he was sent to South Africa to investigate if Sheriff's should start operations there. He advised Sheriff's that it was not a good business decision. He then resigned his job and stayed in South Africa. Mabel and the two children, Mary (8) and Barry (3), sailed to Cape Town in April 1949. Don and Helen started and owned Purity Baby Food which was later sold to Ricket and Coleman, and then a variety of food processing plants and frozen food plants in South Africa. Returned to Canada and lived in British Columbia. THOMPSON - PIERCE Trinity United Church, Peterborough, was the scene of a lovely autumn wedding on Saturday afternoon, when Mabel Helen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Pierce became the bride of Donald A. Thomson, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.C. Thomson of Orillia. The Rev. George Easton conducted the ceremony. Mrs. H.A. Mitchell sang the solo O Promise Me and Miss Mabel Clarry played the organ music. The Church was beautifully decorated with yellow and bronze chrysanthemums. The bride, given in marriage by her father, looked charming in her mother's wedding gown of ivory satin, with fitted tucked bodice and short train. She wore a finger length tulle veil, held in place with ostrich feather tips, and carried Talisman roses and lily-of-the-valley. Miss Mary Pierce attended her sister, wearing a floor-length gown of aquamarine satin with fitted basque and puffed sleeves, and headdress of ostrich tips with velvet streamers to match her gown. She carried a contrasting bouquet of bronze baby mums. The groom was attended by his brother John Thomson, of Painswick and the ushers were Mr. John Pierce, brother of the bride and Mr. Willard Thompson, of Toronto. Following the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents on Homewood Avenue, Peterborough. Mrs. Pierce received with he bridal couple wearing a gown of grape wine faille with matching accessories and corsage of Joanne Hill roses. Mrs. Thomson, mother of the groom, was in black with silver fox and shoulder bouquet of bettertime roses. For travelling the bride chose a teal blue ensemble with coat of French boucle with crimmer fur trim and small hat with wine veil. They left for a motor trip through Quebec and will reside in Halifax. They renovated it so they could have a town house and the children could attend school in Lacadena. They moved the farm buildings in 1966 to N 1/2 22-21-18-3 (Riverview Ranch) when their property was going to be flooded by the South Saskatchewan River and Diefenbaker Dam Project. Edga Jane Walker was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Walker, of Creighton, Medonte. She was in her seventieth year. Her early girlhood days were spent at her home at Creighton. In January of 1899, she was married to Mr. George Overend, of Fairvalley, and her married life has been spent in that district. She has been a faithful and active member of St. George's Church, Fairvalley, and the funeral this afternoon will be held from there, conducted by the Rev. W.J. Province. For a number of years she was on the executive of the Women's Auxiliary of the church, and her helping hand will be missed. Besides her husband she is survived by one daughter, Dora, Mrs. Earl Rose of Fairvalley. There are two sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Frank Rix and Mrs. Neil Matheson, Warminster, George Walker and David Walker, Orillia, Wilfred and Archie Walker of Creighton. In 1914, were living at Lot 24, Concession 1, Minto Township where their daughter Janet's marriage took place. Fanny was a seamstress and worked for her husband's sister, Bell Martin in her shop in Palmerston. Buried beside her husband in Palmerston Cemetery, Plot M-12-2, Concession 1, Lot 26, Minto Township. Fanny's home was the gathering spot for Thomson family gatherings. Fanny suffered very badly from arthritis. Fanny's granddaughter, Marion Bridge stayed with Fanny for about three years after William died. Fanny then went to live with her daughter Mabel at Rodney, Ontario but they did not get along. WILFRED WALKER On Wednesday, October 6, the residents of Eady and vicinity received a great shock when it was learned that Mrs. Wilfred Walker had passed away at the Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Orillia in her 49th year. Mrs. Walker had been ill only a few weeks and had undergone two major operations, but gradually grew weaker, passing away Wednesday morning. Her maiden name was Hettie Alice Flossie McKinley, daughter of the late William McKinley and Mrs. McKinley, of 525 Indian Road, Toronto. She was married on October 26, 1910, in St. Anns's Anglican Church, Toronto, by the Rev. Canon Skye, and has resided in the community of Eady ever since. She had one of the most active and inspiring dispositions, always eager to learn something new and more eager to pass the idea along to someone else. She was an untiring worker for the community's interests, having taken an active part in the building of Eady Community Hall, and was interested in it until the end. She was an energetic member of the Women's Institute, having filled all the offices at different times. She was a member of St. George's Church, Fairvalley, and had been a member of the Women's Auxiliary. The Eady community has suffered the loss of a most energetic and inspiring leader and long will remain the memory of Mrs. Walker's good and kindly acts. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband and mother, three sons, Beverley, Fred, and Edgar, all at home, and three sisters, and two brothers, Mrs. F. Wickson, Mrs. G. Potts, Mrs. B. Williamson, and Edison and Norman, all of Toronto. The funeral was held on Friday afternoon from her residence to St. George's Church, Fairvally, were service was conducted by the Rev. W.J. Province, burial taking place in the Fairvalley cemetery. The pallbearers were six nephews, Walker and Joseph Rix, Walker and Kenneth Matheson, David Walker Jr., and John Bennet, of Toronto. There were many beautiful floral tributes showing the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. F. Wickson, Mrs. G. 1293 | aka Fran. Frances was attending Birmingham Southern College were she met Roy Edward Warren. They married October 6, 1937. She attended Tulane University obtaining a Social Work Degree. Roy joined the Air Force and was stationed in Hawaii. Frances lived in Hawaii until 1942. She was on a ship going to Washington State when Pearl Harbour was bombed. Roy was killed in action March 22, 1944. Frances attended Washington State University obtaining her Masters Degree. Roy and Frances had no family. Frances married Walter Neil Kanawyer on July 7, 1951. They had two children, Merry Ann (married Bill Clingen, had no family and divorced) and William "Bill" Neil (had a daughter, Laurel). Frances married Sherman in 1973. She worked for Camarillo State Hospital, State of California, retiring in 1986. Fran suffered a series of small strokes in the 1990s which left her hard of hearing and affected her memory. 1296 | aka Frank. Frances was the tenth of eleven children. She started school when she was eight. The family moved into Neepawa when she was eleven and she continued her education there. Attended Normal School in Brandon. She taught school in a one-room school house. Later she moved to California and lived with an older sister. She returned to Neepawa to nurse a terminally ill sister. After she married Harvey, she described the ten years they lived on the farm as the happiest years of her life. Frank belong to an Amateur Theatre group. In 1940, they sold the farm and moved into Neepawa and lived with her mother-in-law. After Harvey died, Frank sold the house and moved into an apartment. She went to work as a bookkeeper and worked until she was 70. In 1982 was living in Neepawa, Manitoba, Canada when her sister-in-law Mary Helen Thomson died. Frances is buried in Lot 14, Block 5, Range 11B, Riverview Cemetery, Neepawa.
